Too Many Tools, Not Fixing Anything

Too many business tools used at work is a problem we can all relate to. No one is immune, not small companies nor large ones. According to Siftery, Facebook uses 175 tools and Apple 169! While it is great to live in a time that businesses have their pick of resources, oftentimes we find ourselves more lost than before. What exactly is the problem and what’s the solution? 

What are the downsides?

First off, everyone’s biggest complaint. Too many notifications! Your inbox, your desktop, your phone and sometimes all three get flooded with the same notification. As the notifications build up, so does your stress level. Not too mention, the time spent stressing and the time spent clearing the notifications (for sanity’s sake), takes employees away from their actual work. This only leads to more stress and results in a never-ending cycle.

 

It’s expensive. Paying for multiple tools with multiple users is not cheap. If you want to integrate tools with one another, that often comes with the extra cost of upgrading plans. Uploading and exporting data is no easy feat and if the platform does not do this for you, you will have to hire someone who can. Do not forget that your staff will need training and time to master each tool. You will spend hours on setting up systems, signing users in, training, assigning ownership and duties, etc. This is another way your company will lose money. If your employees are busy familiarizing themselves with a platform, who is completing their tasks?

 

With so much information, messages, and data being sent and received it is bound to get lost. Plus you have to account for different departments using different tools, or trying to communicate with people outside their department. It becomes a nightmare to locate information. Top that with all the passwords and usernames you have to keep track of!

 

Because there are so many tools on the market, it is hard to find something truly unique. Many of them do basically the same thing. The catch is that the tools differ by one or two small features, unfortunately for you, these small differences are often things that attracted you to the platform in the first place.
